Floating solar projects are projected to be built as the very first plan in Myanmar on three dams located in Naypyidaw; Chinese companies are highly interested in it.
“The solar panels will be installed on the water. Therefore, it won’t take the land’s space. The advantage is it can control evaporation of water. There are three places we have chosen. However, the projects have not yet been allowed to run. Tenders will be invited. Most companies that came for survey are Chinese,” an official from the Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MOEE) said.
Three chosen dams are Yan Aung Myin Dam, Chaungmagyi Dam and Paunglaung Dam from Naypyidaw.
“Floating solar doesn’t exist in Myanmar yet. This will be the first time. Then, it will go all over the country,” the officer added.
The MOEE develops many electric power plants including hydropower, solar power, natural gas, and thermal power plants in order to meet the yearly growing demands for electricity.
The ministry has invited a tender for constructing a ground-mounted solar power plant on June 15.
Currently, 18 tender invitations for solar power plants have been announced by the ministry for ensuring adequate electricity supply in the upcoming summer.
The country’s first solar power plant is located in Minbu, Magwe Region. The second plant is Thapyaywa Solar Power Plant which locates in Tharsi Township, Mandalay.
Nationwide electricity consumption jumped to 50 percent in December 2019 and 55 percent in 2020 from 34 percent in 2016. Myanmar aims for 100 percent nationwide electricity access by the year 2030.
