The Union Election Commission expects that there will be more political parties after new laws and bylaws related to political parties’ registrations have been enacted.

The UEC spokesperson Khin Maung Oo expressed this information during the 18th press conference held in Naypyidaw on July 26.
The Union Election Commission is drafting political parties’ registration law and bylaw at present.

“We are currently drafting political parties’ registration law and bylaw. We expect that there will be more political parties after those laws and bylaws have been enacted,” Khin Maung Oo said.

National Democratic Force (NDF) commented that the commission should discuss and take opinions from the political parties before the law is enacted.

“I mean all legal provisions that they are currently amending and drafting. We’ve learned that they are amending the political parties’ registration law. However, the commission doesn’t meet with us (the political parties). Last year December when discussing PR was the last meeting between the UEC and the political parties. The political parties are not allowed to know what laws they are drafting. The UEC should meet and discuss with us (the political parties) before enactment,” Toe Toe, secretary 1 of the NDF said.

The UEC met with the political parties at least four times to discuss practicing the PR system.

Dr. Aye Maung, the chairman of the Arakan Front Party, remarked that prior discussion should be made before laws are enacted.

He said, “It will better and more transparent if the UEC shows what provisions are involved in the law. Otherwise, it will be criticized for no transparent. However, I think that the UEC isn’t the only body that is drafting the laws. There will be other members and legal advisors in drafting those laws.”
