Facebook removes Myanmar’s local news outlet links at full tilt

Tun MT (NP News) - July 30
A Myanmar local news media outlet – the NP News standing ‘Neo Politics News’ – has been experiencing being removed its website links by the American giant tech company, widely known as ‘Facebook’ on its social media platform for no reason in quick, hostile and energetic ways these days.

The NP News’ readers or the persons who shared the NP News’ website links were warned that their posts go against the Community Standard of Facebook. Some posts were shared by the users a long time ago.

One of the NP users posted, “These are all for NP News’ links that I have shared. Why? The posts published by Myo Yan Naung Thein instigating to kill all from different sides saying ‘No Mercy to even children’ weren’t removed. Funny Facebook’s Community Standard.” He posted it together with the screenshot of the Facebook’s warning that he received.

Another user commented, “This hostile tactic (of Facebook) is targeting with the main concerns the NP News since the NP is increasingly getting credits from the public for its neutral information and anti-war approaches.”

Questions arise here - why do the website links of the news media that is operating legally within a country violate the Facebook Community Standard? Or the Facebook involved deep-down in Myanmar's current political crisis by insulting the freedom of expression or the press free?

This intimidating movement by the Facebook to a local news outlet from Myanmar is possibly done by a collective force or the combination of both human engagements and the tech-aid AI or the Algorithm, a female Myanmar national who is living and working in the IT field in the UK remarks.

She said, “This is made by a group of people. They forcibly place the NP’s website link into the FB’s AI system to make it blacklisted although there isn’t any violation. This group of people may involve even 500 or 600 entities. They cooperate with the FB’s Myanmar policy team members taking office in Singapore, I assume.”

The source continued, “In the aspect of the IT industry, this incident is they are violating the community standard policy that was laid down by themselves (the Facebook policymakers) consciously and intentionally to insult the press freedom or the freedom of expression.”

The NP News’ Chief Editor Kyaw Myo Min shared his recent experiences of being bullied by the Facebook as follows.

“I received more than 150 warning notifications as per the Community Standard within 72 hours. I replied with those warnings ‘disagree with decision’. However, when I looked at the posts that I shared or posted that they accused of violating Community Standard, I noticed that all of them are the NP News’ website links, the normal news. Even sports or celebrity news are being accused of violating the CS. This is a provocative and deliberate course of action of interdiction to exposure of the NP News’ website links on the Facebook,” the chief editor said.

On the other hand, the antagonistic pages or entities including the news pages of ‘yellow press’ or ‘sub-standard journalism’ that are infiltrating the public to commit crimes or killing by belligerents under the sense of insecurity or fear and anger amid the country’s political unrest. Such aggressive or pro-terrorism written pieces including pictorial, articles, fake news and disinformation, or even comments were never removed no matter how much reported is made.

Regarding with this occurrence, the NP News’ chief editor made his remark as follows.

“For the Myanmar community, the Facebook endeavors to spread and deliver only hate speeches and misinformation among the Myanmar public despite its claim to ‘no hate speech’ instead of calming the situations in Myanmar. In fact, the Facebook allows infiltrations to commit murder, fight or kill people. On the contrary, the news outlets, like us, that are encouraging the public to move forward via peaceful courses with no killing, no hatred are expelled to publish,” the chief editor Kyaw Myo Min said.

As a matter of fact, this isn’t the first time of the Facebook showing its hostility on its social platform against the Myanmar’s local news outlets with few operating years but neutral.

In 2021, the Facebook expelled antagonistically another local news outlet known as ‘People Media’ from its platform permanently. The People Media cannot return to publishing its neutral information on the Facebook platform never.

Disagree completely with fB for violating its own policy of freedom of speech through practice of politically biased standards or probably based on disinformation. NP News has been reporting news in proper way with good ethics
