Union Election Commission (UEC) told that it is a concern if there are many political parties when the PR system (Proportional Representation election system) is practiced.

The spokesperson of the UEC Khin Maung Oo told this during a talk show on sharing PR knowledge.

There will be less chance of wasting votes provided by the eligible voters in the PR system as one of the advantages, said Khin Maung Oo.

Democratic malpractices and advocates usually practiced by the big parties in the parliament as the adverse effects of the majoritarianism will be balanced; and policy and implementations of the ruling parties will also be counterchecked, he continued.

“Political parties and independent candidates will achieve seats in the parliament in accord with the threshold of minimum votes that they attain in the PR system,” Khin Maung Oo said.

He proposed to impose legal rules and restrictions by the UEC to prohibit the emergence of too many political parties in the political space of Myanmar, he continued.

At present, there are a total of 92 political parties, of which 43 are based on political ideology while the rest 49 are the parties that are organized by ethnicity or territory respectively.

The UEC is carrying out ground voter list preparation for the accuracy of the voter lists in the upcoming election.

State Administration Council intends to convene the general election in 2023.

Chairman of the SAC and Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, during an interview with a Russian media in his Russia trip, said, regarding turmoil situation within the country and less possibility to hold the election as excepted by the pessimists: “We can completely change the situation and may be able to hold elections within the previously promised time frame. It is too early to discuss to postpone the elections.
