Chances are there for the former State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi to meet with the ASEAN Special Envoy H.E Prak Sokhonn as the State Administration Council (SAC) has agreed in principle to arrange a meeting between them; however, chances depend on her desire whether she accepts to meet or not.

Spokesperson of the Information Team of the SAC Major General Zaw Min Tun said, ‘Nothing is irreparable in politics. We do not have a specific remark on what the ASEAN envoy said’ at the 18th Press Conference held in Naypyidaw on July 26.

If the former State Counselor doesn’t refuse to meet with envoy or the negotiator, the SAC authorities will also arrange another meeting for Suu Kyi with a former parliamentarian of the NLD representative to discuss future of the NLD, reports say.

“I will meet her only after she met with the ASEAN envoy. That’s for sure,” the former MP said.

In fact, the former parliamentarian of the NLD representative made request the SAC to arrange the meeting with her only after Prak Sokhonn.

However, the arrangements are expected to occur only when all of her court cases are finished, analysts say. They calculated that the authorities will finish hearings of all court cases by the end of this year by last.

Nonetheless, one condition exists here to organize those meeting requests only if Suu Kyi has willing to accept it. Therefore, possibility of the meetings with the ASEAN envoy and the former MP of the NLD representative much rely on Suu Kyi’s ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to meet.

“Her court cases are being heard on daily basis to finish them all ASAP,” a source with knowledge of the case told NP News.

Aung San Suu Kyi, 77, has already been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in twelve cases including four corruption charges and overruling the Union Election Commission. Seven cases still remain yet to make verdicts including violation of Official Secret Act.

Another ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ of Suu Kyi plays key as will be a core guidance for the political vision of the National League for Democracy whether it continues the legal political path or give up the lawful platform. To be more precise, her guidance is the sole directive on whether the NLD will run in the upcoming 2023 election or won’t.

With respect to the NLD’s legal status, journalists frequently asked the spokesperson of the Union Election Commission, Khin Maung Oo during the press conferences.

As a matter of fact, the UEC is waiting for the NLD to join to be audited the party’s financial accounts and properties though the NLD has failed to be examined.

Khin Maung Oo said, “We have requests from the NLD members to wait for them to process the examination as they have difficulties to engage since some of its central executive members are detained while some are the exiles. Therefore, we give them more extension period for the NLD.”

In 2010 election, the NLD boycotted the election earlier; however, it returned to the legal path in 2012 by-election since then-President Thein Sein willingly welcomed her and her party return in Myanmar’s political space.
