Myanmar expects six hydropower projects to finish in next three years

Six hydropower projects, including Shweli 3 Hydro Power Plant, which will produce more than 1300 Megawatt are projected to finish within the next three years.

Four hydropower plants including Dee Doke, Shweli 3, Upper Yeywa, and Tha Htay are expected to be completed within 2025-26 FY, according to the information released by the Ministry of Planning and Finance.

The Middle Paunglaung hydropower plant project is intended to complete in 2026-27 FY and the upper Kengtawng hydropower plant is targeted to finish in 2024-25 FY, according to reports.

The Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MOEE) will spend one billion kyats for the implementation of the Shweli 3 hydropower plant in 2022-23 FY.

The MOEE is using 200m kyats for the Dee Doke project implementation and over 22b kyats for the Upper Yeywa project during this fiscal year.

Again, the MOEE will be using 67b kyats for the Tha Htay project, over 36b kyats for the Upper Kengtawng project, and seven billion for middle Paunglaung plants, reports say.

A total of 1,325 megawatts including approximately 671 megawatts, 152 megawatts, 60 megawatts, 280 megawatts, 111 megawatts, and 51 megawatts are expected to be produced from Shweli 3, middle Paunglaung, Dee Doke, upper Yeywa, Tha Htay and upper Kengtawng hydropower plants respectively.

According to the information Ministry of Planning and Finance, 109 cities and 35,530 villages are still to be lit by the national power system.
