Thousands of Villagers Evacuate to Laputta for Potential Cyclone

Heart Laputta Social Welfare Organization reported that thousands of villagers left their villages and temporarily moving to Laputta township. These villagers are evacuating for potential cyclone.

After the cyclone warning on 6th May, residents from different villages in Laputta township started to evacuate towards the town.

Responsible personnel from Heart Laputta recounted to NP News that “We don’t know the exact number of evacuated people. The number may be close to thousands. Many people flooded in from lower part of Laputta. We can only take care of health sector. Large number of people are concentrating so there are many challenges in accommodation. Most of them are now staying at the monasteries and schools.”

It is reported that people are now evacuating at the schools, monasteries and residence nearby.

Not only Laputta, some are evacuating to Myaungmya township to take temporary shelters for the potential cyclone.

Laputta is one of the Nargis cyclone severely hit areas during 2008 and the Nargis Cyclone left causality of thousands of people in the cyclone hit area.

According to the weather report from the Department of Metrology and Hydrology Myanmar, there is a low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal and it is highly likely that the low-pressure area can transform into depression and cyclone. There is also a forecast that the cyclone can enter into Myanmar.
