Hsu (NP News) - June 24

Recent reports stated that so-called defense minister of the exiled shadow government NUG Yee Mon masterminded the Thanlyin Bridge bome plot which failed the mission just before opening ceremony.

Thanks to reports from vigilant citizens and law enforcement efforts, a plot to attack the inauguration of Yangon's Thanlyin Bridge No. 3 on 8 June was thwarted. The plan involved using 107mm rockets against innocent civilians. Myanmar authorities arrested a terrorist organization linked to the NUG.

On 8 June 2024, terrorists, including Chyo Gyi (aka Hein Htet Aung) who planned to attack the inauguration ceremony of Thanlyin Bridge No. 3 in Yangon Region with 107mm rockets intending to harm innocent civilians, were arrested. According to a report they have been planning to detonate 107 mm rockets at the crowded opening ceremony of the Thanlyin Bridge 3. The arrest included nine terrorists (eight men and one woman) along with three 107mm rockets, three fuses, two hand grenades, two battery cases, four wire coils, and other related equipment.

According to the announcement of the State Administration Council (SAC) on 11 June, several UG (underground) members were arrested on the morning of 8 June in an old wooden cabin in the shipyard workers’ housing area in Ward 61 of Dagon Seikkan Township, Yangon. The detainees confessed that Arkar Min, of the Brigade Drone Force PDF, provided instructions on using rockets via Instagram in April 2024. During the Thanlyin Bridge No. 3 inauguration on May 19, Phyu Hnin Aye from Yangon UG contacted Sein Gyi (aka Aung Htwe) to plan an explosion at the ceremony and transported three 107mm rockets and two grenades for the bridge opening ceremony explosion.

Following the confession of Chyo Gyi (aka Hein Htet Aung), additional terrorists belonging to the Dark Shadow group were arrested on the morning of 14 June in Yangon Region. The arrests included Myo Thein Tun (34 years old) with an FGC-9 pistol with its magazine at Room No. 13, Zoological Garden Staff Housing, Mingaladon Township; Zaw Gyi (aka Ko Htet, 30 years old) with a handmade mine, a China-made hand grenade, and one remote at Room No. B-7, Kyan Sittha Housing, East Hlaing Tharyar Township; and Ye Zaw Tun (aka Phoenix, 34 years old) with 29 Point-38 bullets, five handmade mines, a handmade firebomb, four keypad phones and nine batteries at Room No. 4, Zoological Garden Staff Housing, Mingaladon Township. Shein Myint Myo Aung (aka Ko Shein, 21 years old) was also arrested at Room No. 103, Kyan Sittha Housing, East Hlaing Tharyar Township.

According to their confessions, Chyo Gyi (aka Hein Htet Aung), Ye Zaw Tun (aka Phoenix), Zaw Gyi (aka Ko Htet), and Shein Myint Myo Aung (aka Ko Shein) joined the Dark Shadow terrorist group led by fugitive Pyu Hnin Aye (aka Mee Ein Shin) after attending a one-month explosive training course in August 2021 near Lay Kay Kaw in the KNLA Brigade 6 area. During the training, they participated in an online meeting led by Yee Mon, who is currently serving as a Defence Minister under the NUG, who instructed them to carry out terrorist activities in Yangon upon their return, providing them with necessary weapons, ammunition, and explosives.

Consequently, Chyo Gyi (aka Hein Htet Aung), Ye Zaw Tun (aka Phoenix), Zaw Gyi (aka Ko Htet), and Shein Myint Myo Aung (aka Ko Shein) returned to Yangon in October 2021 and joined the Dark Shadow terrorist group led by fugitive Chan Nyein Thu (aka Panda Lay). They carried out terrorist activities in Hlaing Tharyar, Mingaladon, and Dagon Seikkan townships with support in weapons, ammunition, explosives, and finances provided by NUG Defence Minister Yee Mon through fugitive Chan Nyein Thu (aka Panda Lay).

According to confessions, the Dark Shadow group, acting under the instructions of NUG Defence Minister Yee Mon, carried out two bombings in Yangon. In December 2021, Ye Zaw Tun (aka Phoenix) detonated two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in front of the Electricity Office in Mingaladon Township. More recently, in the second week of April 2024, Zaw Gyi (aka Ko Htet) and Shein Myint Myo Aung (aka Ko Shein) attacked a police outpost at the end of 5th Street, Hlaing Tharyar Township, with two hand grenades. These indiscriminate violent attacks targeted civilian infrastructure and police forces.

The authorities will continue to pursue legal action against the arrested suspects. They urge the public to help combat terrorism by reporting any suspected involvement or support for terrorist activities, including information on suspects' hiding places and movements. Confidential reports will be treated with discretion and may be rewarded. It is reported that the cooperation of all citizens is essential for a swift return to peace and stability.
