Hsu/ Thant Zin (NP News) - July 25
"While the upcoming election may not be a panacea for the current challenges, an inclusive political dialogue is necessary to move forward," Colonel Saw Kyaw Nyunt, spokesperson for the 7 EAO Alliance, told The NP News.
"Our people, including those in our region, have experienced the effects of armed conflict. They are still experiencing it now. People are constantly on the move, with homes being destroyed and lives being lost. In such a challenging time for the peace and stability of our region, we do not fully understand the matter of elections. It is the civil authority of the people to decide on national issues. Given the current situation we are facing, there are many challenges. Looking at the parties that want to participate in the elections, some are registered, and some are not. There are many political groups with public support that are currently unable to participate. Therefore, it is very difficult for us to accept the elections as a perfect solution to overcome the current difficulties and crises," he said.
Despite prior attempts at political dialogue, the 7 EAO Alliance intends to engage in further discussions with the post-election government and other stakeholders.
“Despite the impending change in government, we believe it is crucial to engage in dialogue to address the current challenges and crises faced by the entire country, particularly the suffering of its people. Inclusive discussions with the government, military, international entities, political parties, civil society organizations, and regional leaders are essential to reach a consensus.”
Moreover, U Hla Htay, Chairman of the Yangon Region People’s Party, emphasized that direct negotiations with the current conflicting groups will bring about a positive and essential step and so it is welcomed by political parties.”
“Negotiation is beneficial. Presently, there are multiple conflicting groups. If these groups persist without engaging in face-to-face negotiations, only destruction awaits. Achieving a positive outcome is no simple task. To foster improvement, negotiation is an essential method—a necessary approach. If we can move in this direction, we wholeheartedly welcome it.”
