Myanmar honors 155th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi through old relationships

The 155th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi held on 2 October at India Center in Yangon, Myanmar.

The event was organized in collaboration with the Indian Embassy and the U Nay Oke Foundation. At the event, many distinguished guests from political parties, think tanks, famous writers, academia, charity organizations, diplomatic corps, related officials, and the Indian community attended to pay honor.

During the event, the Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Abhay Thakur delivered a speech regarding the relationship between Myanmar and India built by Mahatma Gandhi and presented the translation books of Dharma in Sanskrit or Dhamma in Pali to the Shwe Dagon Board of Trustees.

Dating back to the 1900s, Mahatma Gandhi visited Myanmar three times in 1902, 1915, and 1929. During his last visit to Myanmar, he preached that the path to true liberation is rooted in dialogue, in social reform, and in uplifting the poor to provide them with a life of dignity. Gandhiji was a great leader of the Indian Independence movement against British colonial rule who also had a good relationship with U Nu, the first Prime Minister of Myanmar. Their interactions were rooted in shared values and mutual respect for each other's efforts towards independence and social justice.

After presenting the relationship rooted between India and Myanmar built by Mahatma Gandhi, all the guests who attended the event were served refreshments with Indian foods and snacks.
