Some statements from media and embassies regarding the demise of Dr. Zaw Myint Maung from leukemia, included false accusations with lack of adequate medical care.
Former Mandalay Region Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was sentenced to 29 years in prison by the Mandalay Region Court on February 11, 2021, under Criminal Case No. 6/7/8/9/10 and Section 55 of the Anti-Corruption Law for ten offenses. The charges included issuing written statements that could jeopardize the state and military following the declaration of the State of Emergency, organizing gatherings against stay-at-home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic, and participating in corrupt activities.
Since Dr. Zaw Myint Maung entered prison, the State Administration Council granted him privileges beyond those typically offered to political prisoners. He was kept in a separate cell and received meals from both the prison and his family. Letters from his family were delivered to him, and any correspondence he sent was forwarded to his family to help preserve their connections, according to the reliable sources.
In fact, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung had been suffering from leukemia since his time as the Chief Minister of Mandalay Region. When he arrived in prison, Dr. Moe Hein, the head of the prison hospital, provided the necessary medical treatment with great care. Additionally, professors from the hematology department at Mandalay General Hospital visited him in prison 23 times to provide treatment, and he received outpatient care at the hospital on eight occasions.
On September 17, 2024, he was granted amnesty in light of his health condition. However, on October 7, 2024, at 3 am he passed away in the ICU of Mandalay General Hospital.
Therefore, the accusations circulating on internet pages about Dr. Zaw Myint Maung's death and the lack of adequate medical treatment are simply attempts to politically attack the SAC government by distorting the truth.
