The TNLA (Ta'ang National Liberation Army) ethnocentric terrorist group has been using force to collect taxes on hotels and vehicles in Mogok, Mandalay Region. Locals report that if the taxes are not paid, the TNLA has been seizing the property.
In recent times, the TNLA and the Mandalay PDF jointly attacked and took control of Mogok city with armed force.
Local residents in Mogok, under the control of the TNLA, are facing numerous hardships. It has been reported that the TNLA is also using force to demand extortion payments from the people.
"One of my friends’ hotel in Mogok was taken over by the TNLA. The tax they demanded was in many millions in Kyat. During the war, there were no guests, so the owner couldn’t earn anything. Since the tax wasn’t paid, they took the hotel. After seizing it, I heard that their superiors are now staying there," a local resident of Mogok told The NP News.
It has been reported that the TNLA in Mogok is also extorting fees from local residents for their vehicles.
"Another case which also is experienced by my friend in Mogok is that he owns backhoes. When the war broke out, his entire family fled. Then, when armed groups entered Mogok, they seized these vehicles by force. What’s happening in Mogok now is that armed groups are behaving like bandits, seizing public property. They’re demanding extortion payments, and if the money isn’t paid, they’re unfairly confiscating public property," the Mogok local continued.
According to the reports made by locals, the TNLA troops are occupying and taking footholds in the public-sites such as hotels and sturdy residential buildings in Mogok.
