Reports from the anti-government media outlet, Khit Thit Media, state that a leader of the local People's Defense Force (PDF) in Mhaw Oo village, Weklet Township, Sagaing Region, was sentenced to five years of hard labour by the National Unity Government (NUG) court for assaulting a three-month pregnant woman.
Reports indicate that in May 2024, Maung Naing, the leader of the local People's Defense Force (PDF) in Mhaw Oo village, Weklet Township, entered the home of a 21-year-old woman who was three months pregnant and assaulted her.
This assault resulted in the woman losing her pregnancy. Following the filing of a case, Maung Naing was sentenced to five years of hard labour by the Weklet Township NUG court on December 22.
Reports indicate that during the assault, the perpetrator threatened to kill the young woman if she reported the incident.
Furthermore, before the court's verdict was announced, Maung Naing, now imprisoned, threatened to kill anyone who testified against him.
The National Unity Government's (NUG) Ministry of Justice (MOJ) has received over 1,800 criminal cases and investigated 1,020 of them.
Since 2021, the PDF has been accused of committing violence, torture, and brutal killings against innocent civilians and monks, while reports suggest that the NUG government overseeing them has not taken effective action.
