A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations (MIFER) and the Chinese International Development and Cooperation Agency regarding the construction of four solar power projects in Yangon, Naypyidaw and Mandalay Regions with a total capacity of 190 megawatts with a total investment of $1 billion from China.
This information came from the National Renewable Energy Committee (NREC) work coordination meeting (1/2025).
For the development of renewable energy, the ministry is implementing renewable energy projects that connect to the national grid and generate electricity. As of December 2024, Myanmar had a total installed capacity of 6,520 megawatts, with 50 percent of the energy generated from hydropower, 43 percent from natural gas, two percent from coal, four percent from solar, and one percent from diesel, said Union Minister for Electric Power U Nyan Tun.
In addition, China has provided $1 billion for four solar energy projects in Yangon, Naypyidaw, and Mandalay Regions, totaling 190 MW. Similarly, under small-scale development projects from India, which are less than $2 million, there is a proposal for the installation of rooftop and ground mounted solar (700) kW at the Naypyidaw Central Training School. Furthermore, there are plans to implement a project under a scheme expected to generate quick benefits, with $50,000 allocated for each project. This includes 25 kW rooftop solar at the Naypyidaw Central Training School and 25 kW at the Electricity Management Department office building, with investments being proposed through the MIFER to the Indian government.
He continued by saying that he hopes that relevant departments in each region will work together to quickly implement solar projects in the country. He also believes that the discussions among the committee members will yield good results in setting processes for the future goals of the NREC Committee. –
