The MNDAA Kokang troops leaving Lashio soon are taking public property with them, according to information obtained by The Statesman.
There are reports that all Kokang troops will withdraw from Lashio, northern Shan State, after the upcoming Thingyan holiday, and that the Tatmadaw security forces will regain control of Lashio.
“We have heard rumors among the people that the MNDAA will hand over Lashio to the Tatmadaw. Currently, the MNDAA is working on earthquake relief projects and making donations in collaboration with the government. We have also heard rumors that the MNDAA will hand over Lashio to the Tatmadaw or co-administer it,” a local man told The Statesman Journal.
Currently, only a few Kokang troops remain in Lashio, and Kokang troops are reportedly transporting public property from the Lashio Municipal Development Office, Fire Department, basic schools, and hospitals in trucks.
CDM staff and supporters of Kokang are reportedly worried about the news that Kokang troops will withdraw from Lashio.
“The Kokang have already taken all the equipment from Lashio, including the fire truck. After the Myanmar new year day, I heard that they will withdraw to Laukkai. The people who are worried are the CDMs, and the people who are working in this armed group. The locals are actually happier if the Tatmadaw returns,” said another resident.
In addition, some local banks in Lashio are preparing to reopen, according to information investigated by The Statesman.
