On April 2, 2025, reports emerged that U.S. President Donald Trump introduced extensive tariffs, presenting them as a necessary response to what he described as decades of "unfair trade practices" harmful to the U.S. economy.

Trump's decision to impose new tariffs on imports from some of the world's poorest nations has sparked a global controversy. Aimed at protecting American industries, the sweeping tariffs—some as high as 49%—targeted countries like Cambodia, Madagascar, and Myanmar, where millions are already grappling with poverty and crises.

Myanmar, already reeling from the aftermath of a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake and ongoing armed conflict, now faces one of the highest tariff rates globally, with a 44% tariff imposed by the United States.

This is expected to have severe repercussions for the nation's already fragile economy, alongside other affected countries like Cambodia and Laos.

As Myanmar appeals to the international community for assistance, concerns are growing about its ability to recover both economically and structurally.

Deputy Commerce Minister Min Min stated that Myanmar is considering measures to address the new tariffs, though no specifics were provided. “At present, officials are focused on providing relief and reconstruction efforts following last month’s massive earthquake,” he added.
