A source told The Statesman Journal that construction work in Mandalay has been halted after the earthquake and is likely to be reviewed by the Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC).
“They will re-inspect the ongoing construction sites. For buildings that already received construction approval and are currently under development, they are preparing to issue an official directive to temporarily halt the work or even completely stop it. But it's not confirmed yet. The directive letter hasn’t been officially released. That’s likely how it will go, because these things need to be thoroughly checked,” the source said.
It is reported that during the inspection, authorities will also verify whether the ongoing construction aligns with the original submitted design or not.
It is reported that the MCDC is currently demolishing structurally dangerous and tilted buildings and houses free of charge.
"Many people have registered to have their homes demolished. However, we prioritize government and departmental buildings first. When it comes to private homes, we make note of the requests and give priority to those that pose serious risks. Right now, we simply don’t have the capacity to demolish every single structure that’s been reported. But the government has said it will provide support and it’s coming. So for now, people will just need to wait a little," said a source from the MCDC.
According to information contacted by The Statesman, the demolition of these dangerous buildings is likely to be dangerous, so negotiations are underway with other organizations based on technical requirements.
