Hsu (NP News) - May 10
The 60-foot Railway Bridge No. (65), situated at milepost 112/10–11 between Hnin Pearl and Taung Zun stations in Beelin Township, Mon State, along the Bago–Mawlamyine railway line, was damaged by a mine explosion around 11:15 PM on May 5. A terrorist group reportedly planted the mine, and Myanmar Railways has since temporarily closed the railway section connecting Hnin Pearl and Taung Zun.
Authorities and local security forces promptly conducted a clearance and inspection at the mine explosion site, where the blast caused two steel beams to collapse, damaged a central bridge pillar, and destroyed several bridge deck slabs. An unexploded handmade mine and related materials were also discovered on the bridge near the explosion site.
Consequently, the Yangon–Mawlamyine train services, Train No. (81) and Train No. (82), have been temporarily suspended due to the mine explosion. Ticketed passengers are receiving refunds, and Myanmar Railways staff are reportedly working urgently to repair the damaged infrastructure to resume operations quickly.
These terrorist acts have targeted state-owned locomotives, carriages, railway tracks, and bridges, as well as passengers and cargo, with the intent to cause destruction, inflict losses, and disrupt safe and peaceful train travel. Despite these repeated acts of sabotage, the government remains committed to enhancing public transportation and ensuring the smooth, efficient movement of goods. It continues to prioritize upgrading rail infrastructure and advancing the railway system through ongoing development plans and strategic projects. –
