The Union Election Commission (UEC) in Myanmar has officially announced the schedule for the second phase of the country's multi-party democratic general election, set for Sunday, January 11, 2026.
This phase will encompass a total of 100 townships across various states and regions nationwide, following the first part of the election, which is already scheduled for December 28, 2025. The UEC's phased approach aims to ensure broad representation and participation across the nation's administrative divisions, including key urban and ethnic minority areas.
The distribution of the 100 townships highlights broad participation across the country. Shan State will have the largest number of polling areas with 17 townships set to vote in this phase. Yangon Region will follow closely with 16 townships. In central Myanmar, Bago Region will hold the second phase of elections in 12 townships. Sagaing Region and Magway Region are both scheduled to include 11 townships each. Ayeyarwady Region will see elections in nine townships. Mandalay Region will feature voting in nine townships.
The southern and northern administrative divisions also show participation. In the south, Mon State will have five townships taking part, while Tanintharyi Region will include three townships. In the northern states, Kachin State will contribute three townships, and Kayah and Kayin States are set to see elections in two townships each.
The UEC stated that this second phase, scheduled for January 11, 2026, is a continuation of the nationwide effort to secure broad political representation following the initial phase on December 28, 2025. –
