The third round of the multi-party democratic general election will be held on January 25, said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, leader of the National Defense and Security Council press team, on November 11.
He said that Phase 1 and Phase 2 will take place on December 28 and January 11, 2026 respectively, and Phase 3 will be held two weeks after Phase 2 on January 25.
He stated that Myanmar is implementing a multi-party democratic system desired by the people in accordance with the 2008 Constitution, and that elections are the fastest mechanism through which the voices of the people can be heard and their interests fulfilled. He urged all eligible citizens to cast their votes in the upcoming multi-party democratic general election.
“In addition, elections held around the world in 2024 have witnessed instances of coercion, including international interference in the affairs of existing governments, and according to the annual report on elections on the website of the International IDEA, only 22 out of 74 elections held around the world were peaceful,” said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun.
He also emphasized that just as Myanmar does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, its own electoral processes which are carried out in accordance with the country’s own situation and history are purely domestic matters that concern only its own people. He stated that no external influence or interference from any other nation should be allowed to disrupt or alter the path toward successful elections in the country, and that only the citizens of Myanmar who cast their votes have the right to decide and determine the country’s future.
Therefore, the political goal of building a truly disciplined multi-party democracy and a strong union based on democracy and federalism can only be achieved steadily and quickly if the government, people, Tatmadaw, and relevant organizations work together. Therefore, Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun called on the entire public to participate and vote in order to successfully complete the multi-party democratic general election to be held in December this year and January next year.
Myanmar held six elections from 1922 to 1947, three elections during the parliamentary era (1948 to 1962), four elections during the Myanmar Socialist Programme Party era (1962 to 1988), one election during the State Law and Order Restoration Council, the State Peace and Development Council (1988-2010), and three elections and three by-elections during the democratic era (2010 to present). –
