Lashio University reopens as stability returns to northern Shan

Lashio University, which had remained closed since the outbreak of armed conflict during the so called 1027 operation, was formally reopened on the morning of November 24 after the Myanma Tatmadaw regained administrative control over Lashio.
With security conditions improving across northern Shan State, the government has gradually resumed operations of basic education schools and begun reopening certain higher education institutions. The reopening of Lashio University marks a significant step in the reactivation of public education services in the region.
A formal ceremony to commemorate the reopening was held at the university campus, attended by Brigadier General Aye Min Oo, Commander of the NorthEast Command. state government ministers, departmental officials, faculty members, students, and invited guests. According to official reports, academic activities have resumed and classes are now underway.
Following the Tatmadaw’s re-establishment of control in Lashio, an area that witnessed prolonged conflict, the government has initiated phased rehabilitation programs in sectors including education, healthcare, and regional development.
Lashio University has been closed since the 1027 operation. Seven months after MNDAA Kokang armed forces withdrew from the area in April, the institution has now reopened to students and faculty, signaling a shift toward administrative normalization in the northern region.
