State power is expected to be transferred to a new government after the parliament session due to take place in late March 2026, Acting President and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, stated on December 11. He said that after the elections, the responsibilities of the State will be handed over to the newly formed government convened by Parliament.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing made these remarks during a meeting with members of the Yangon Region Government and officials from regional and district-level departments.
As the general election will be held in three phases, starting on December 25, 2025, and it will conclude on January 25, 2026. According to Section 123 of the 2008 Constitution, the first regular session of a term of the Pyithu Hluttaw must be held within 90 days after the commencement of the general election. Therefore, the parliament session is expected to convene by the end of March 2026, after which a new government will be formed.
He also stated that “Efforts must be made to ensure the election in Yangon Region is conducted successfully. To hold a free and fair multi-party democratic general election, it is crucial that all eligible voters are able to cast their votes. Measures must also be taken to prevent the kinds of voting irregularities that occurred during the 2020 election, as such irregularities were harmful to the country. Since our government previously assumed responsibility for mistakes in voter lists, it is essential that the upcoming election is conducted without errors in voter registration. While achieving perfect accuracy may not be possible, efforts should be made to ensure the process is as accurate as possible.”
Furthermore, he stated that measures must be taken to ensure that all individuals listed in the voter registry retain their right to vote. Whether or not a person chooses to cast their ballot is their own decision, but it is the government’s responsibility to enable all eligible voters to exercise that right.
In addition, he highlighted that successfully conducting the election is a matter of national prestige, and everyone must work together to ensure that the election is carried out successfully in all polling locations.
