According to the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration (DICA), Myanmar recorded an increase in the number of foreign investment projects; however, the total investment value reflects a year-on-year decline of $291.832 million.
In the 2024–2025 fiscal year, authorities approved 60 foreign and 94 domestic investment projects, totaling $690.189 million and MMK 2,045.675 billion, respectively.
For the fiscal year, foreign investment focused primarily on oil and natural gas, manufacturing, and transport and communications. In contrast, domestic investors prioritized the electricity, manufacturing, and real estate sectors.
From April to January of the current 2025–2026 fiscal year, 67 foreign investment projects totaling $398.357 million were approved. This represents a year-on-year increase in the number of approved projects.
"With two months left in the fiscal year, 67 projects worth US$398.357 million have already been approved. Last year saw fewer projects but a higher total investment—due to more than US$300 million in additional oil and natural gas funding. Excluding that sector, this year's figures are actually higher," a DICA official told The Statesman.
Reports from the current fiscal year (2025–2026) indicate that the main sources of foreign direct investment in Myanmar are China, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
