In Hseinwi, which is controlled by the MMDAA and is dominated by religion, even the signboards of Palace (Haw Nan) are being changed to Chinese words, according to interviews with locals by The Statesman.
Only vehicles with Chinese licenses are allowed to drive in Hseinwi, Shan State (North), and the MNDAA is also acquiring business signs, Hseinwi Palace, and religious buildings to be displayed in both Myanmar and Chinese.
“In the city, the famous Hseinwi Palace is now in Chinese Language. Vehicle license plates are changed to local licenses. They are allowed to drive only if they have their permitted licenses. This has also happened. Only vehicles with Chinese licenses and Chinese plates are permitted to drive. They have to pay taxes and get licenses. Even the communication sector, locals have to use Chinese telecoms. As for shops, Chinese policy dictates that anything opened must have Chinese signage. This includes even pagodas and religious buildings. Everything from religious buildings to small shops must be in Chinese. Everything must be in Chinese, starting with the signboards,” a local told The Statesman.
Furthermore, Chinese businessmen have monopolized not only the gambling industry but also local businesses, making it difficult for locals to make a living.
As a result, the residents are reportedly moving to areas where government administration is in place, including Lashio.
“Local businesses are dominated by Chinese businessmen. Most locals have moved to Lashio and other areas. It is difficult to find a place to live. As long as the MNDAA is in control, it is not convenient. The entire economy is dominated by Chinese. Locals are not allowed to work. There is oppression. That is why local people are leaving the city. The MNDAA is acting like a dictator,” he said. –
