Over 10,000 prisoners pardoned; around 9500 of counterterrorism cases closed

The National Defense and Security Council announced that more than 10,000 prisoners, including those serving sentences under the Counter Terrorism Law, have been pardoned and the cases of more than 9,500 people charged under the Counter Terrorism Law have been closed to mark the occasion of the Tabaung full moon day and Farmers' Day, which falls on March 2, 2026.
In line with these commemorative days, in consideration of humanitarian grounds and public sentiment, 2,825 prisoners serving sentences in various prisons, detention centers, and camps were granted amnesty under Section 401, Sub-section (1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The amnesty was granted with the condition that if they commit another offense, they will be required to serve the remainder of their original sentences in addition to any new sentence imposed.
Similarly, in order to maintain friendly relations between countries, 10 foreign prisoners serving sentences in various prisons and detention centers were granted amnesty and deported under Section 401, Sub-section (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code.
In addition, 7,337 prisoners who were serving sentences in various prisons/detention centers for committing crimes under Section 50(j) and Section 52(a) of the Counter Terrorism Law were granted remission of their remaining sentences under Section 401, Sub-section (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Furthermore, authorities have closed 9,532 pending court cases of 12,487 people charged under Section 50(j) and Section 52(a) of the Counter Terrorism Law and (512) of the Criminal Procedure Code for those who are absconding. –
