The Swa Creek Bridge (Mandalay to Yangon) on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway (return route), which collapsed due to the Mandalay earthquake has been reconstructed and about 70 percent of the reconstruction work has been completed, an official for the expressway told The Statesman.
“We are working hard to complete the bridge by the end of March. For both the approach road and the bridge to be completed, we may reach Thingyan. We are working day and night. Now, the steel frame and the beams are being installed. About 70 percent of the entire bridge is completed. The approach road should start after the abutments of the bridge. The access road is fast. They are working as fast as they can,” he said.
Officials are working hard to complete the bridge so that vehicles can pass through it again before the end of April. Currently, about 70 percent of the bridge construction has been completed.
“The top abutment took a little longer because of landslides and other things that had to be done to protect the approach road. As it took a little longer, the approach road was delayed a little. As for the bridge, the middle pillars are almost finished. We expect to be able to finish it before the end of April,” he said.
The Mandalay earthquake that struck on March 28, 2025, damaged the Swa Creek Bridge on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway, as well as some sections of the expressway, so repairs and maintenance are being carried out at a rapid pace and could be completed before March.
The Expressway Maintenance, Repair and Supervision Team has also warned vehicles to slow down near milestones where road maintenance is being carried out. –
