Law prescribes death penalty in human trafficking if victim dies or disabled in torture

Authorities prescribe the death penalty in the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law against the traffickers who are convinced torturing the trafficked victim to death or disabled.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing approved the law for enactment in June.

The law was drafted with purposes to protect and help all victims of human trafficking, especially women and children; and it aims to eliminate human trafficking under effective legal sentences.

Whoever is guilty of trafficking in persons, especially women, children and youth shall, on conviction be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend from a minimum of 10 years to a maximum of imprisonment for life and may also be liable to a fine.

In 2021, a total of 160 traffickers were sentenced to ten years to twenty years imprisonment term on guilty of trafficking in persons, according to data released by the Myanmar Police Forces.

Traffickers target the victims by exploiting the conditions associated with poverty, economic collapse, and low living standard into forced labour; hunts the victims by taking advantage of advanced technology, according to the police force.

Myanmar nationals are trafficked while illegally working in foreign countries. Again, foreigners deceive Myanmar nationals into illegally work in abroad, the police force said.
