Shanni community condemns killing of Shanni Buddhist monk by KIA, PDF

A group of rebels affiliated by Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and PDFs reportedly killed a Shanni ethnic Buddhist monk in Banmauk, Sagaing Region on September 4.

The Shanni Nationalities Army (SNA) released a statement on September 6 that Naungpat Sayadaw U Gandamar was killed by PDF and KIA.

The Sayadaw is a Central Executive Committee member of Union of Shanni Sangha (Myanmar). He carried out missionary on Buddhism, Shanni literature and Shanni ethnic developments.

The KIA and PDF combined group abducted and killed Sayadaw near Nanhsa village on September 4 and the body was buried, Shanni civil societies said.

The SNA said, “Killing a Buddhist monk brutally is an inhumane act, which also threatens Shanni ethnics and the Buddhism.”

The SNA statement continued that those rebels are the group that is committing crimes and violating human rights covering under federal-democracy and revolution.

Shanni communities demanded KIA and PDF including the NUG (shadow government) effective responsibility of killing of the monk.

Aggressive assaults on Shanni ethnics have been occurring since the establishment of the KIA in the territories where Shanni ethnics are the majority especially in Sagaing’s Homalin, Hkamti and Banmauk townships and Mohnyin, Mogaung, Myitkyina and Banmaw townships in Kachin State.
