Due to persistent heavy rainfall and rising water levels, residents in the lower-lying areas and wards of Bago are experiencing the flood.
Spokesperson Tin Oo stated, "It has been raining continuously, pouring heavily day in and day out. The critical water level of the Bago River is 880 cm, but as of this afternoon, it has surged to 960 cm, surpassing its danger threshold."
Currently, a total of 12 wards and three villages, including Ka Hlar Ni Village, Kyun Thar Yar Village, and Ywar Thit Village, situated in the downtown areas of Bago, are experiencing widespread flooding.
He added, "As of this morning, 12 wards and 3 villages have been affected. This has led to the evacuation of 1,261 households, totaling 5,648 individuals who are now seeking shelter in 22 evacuation centers established at monasteries, schools, and community halls."
The critical water level for Bago Region usually stands at 880 cm. The recorded water level for Bago was 960 cm. Nevertheless, yesterday, the water level reached a historic high of 970 cm, surpassing the previous record.
The Bago Region Government, along with dedicated volunteers, is actively assisting in delivering essential rescue items to the flood victims.
Furthermore, the railway station near Kali village has also been flooded, causing disruptions to the normal train schedule. As a result, passengers traveling from Mawlamyaing to Mandalay are required to disembark from the train and switch to highway coaches for their journey to Yangon.
"The railway track at the entrance of Bago, specifically in Kali, has been flooded. To ensure the safety of railway passengers traveling from Mawlamyaing and Mandalay, over 300 passengers were transported to Yangon via express coaches, under the arrangement of the Bago Region Government," stated the spokesperson.
Furthermore, as a result of the flooding near the 39th milestone on the Yangon-Mandalay Highway in Bago Region, motorists on this route are urged to exercise extra caution while driving.
Teikgyi and Hlegu townships in Yangon Region, Kyiektho Township in Mon State, Pyin Oo Lwin Township in Mandalay Region are also facing flooding and heavy rain.
Regarding the flood situation, a volunteer assisting in Teikgyi Township reported to NP News that “The water level has receded, but lower-lying areas remain susceptible to flood. Several households in Chin Kone Village have been evacuated; however, there have been no reports of severe cases so far."
