According to the Ministry of Commerce’s announcement on January 5, India has extended the policy of free import of black grams from Myanmar up to 2025. The black gram is the major item among beans and pulses that are exported from Myanmar to India.

“We’re glad so much to receive this kind of notification from India. According to the information that we heard that they are not able to fill up their acreage, and the prices of beans are going up, I hope that they will give more grantees to this side. Myanmar used to export two million tons of beans to foreign countries. India is the major customer,” a consultant from Myanmar Pulses, Beans, Maize and Sesame Seeds Merchant Association (MPBMSMA), U Soe Win Maung told NP News.

In May 2023, the Indian Commerce Department relaxed the policy related to black grams and pigeon peas from setting them as the restricted goods to the products that can be imported freely; effective until 31 March 2024.

The abovementioned announcement of India is expected not only to bring benefits to Myanmar's bean farmers and bean exporters, but also strengthen the bean market.

Beans from Myanmar are mainly exported to India and China, and are also purchased from Asian countries. Currently, Myanmar stands as one of the largest producers and exporters of beans in the world.
