Myanmar's first bran oil factory is continuing to import equipment and production will start early 2025, U Ye Min Aung, chairman of the Myanmar Rice Federation, told The NP News.

Under the leadership of the Myanmar Rice Federation, Myanmar's first rice bran oil and refined oil plant was implemented at the MAPCO rice mill in Pyinmana Township, Naypyidaw in February 2024.

At present, the construction works are continuing and the works to import the equipment are also underway process.

“The construction works are under the process. The project will be completed in early 2025. At present, the factory equipment are being imported from India. The remaining processes will be implemented next year,” U Ye Min Aung said.

The plant, which includes crude bran oil and refined oil, will be able to produce 9,000 tons of crude oil and 6,300 tons of refined oil per year, totaling about 15,300 tons. It is reported that ten factories are planned to be built in Ayeyawady, Yangon, and Bago, including Naypyidaw.

The oil produced from the mentioned factories will be sold in the domestic market, and the surplus will be exported mainly to Japan, Korea, and Europe.

Myanmar consumes about 1200,000 tons of edible oil every year, while the domestic production is only about 300,000 tons, therefore, Myanmar has to import about 900,000 tons from abroad annually.

In addition, in order to ensure self-sufficiency in edible oil in the country, it is reported that there are negotiations to allow large foreign agricultural companies to come and invest in the vacant land in the country.

In the current domestic market, the price rate of palm oil set at 17,000 kyats per viss, while soybean oil is at 28,000 kyats per viss.
