Academic qualifications of parliamentarians to be restricted

Union Election Commission plans to restrict the educational status of the candidates in the relevant electoral laws for upcoming election. But belongings and possessions of them won’t be restricted.

Since parliamentarians play a key role in the legislative pillar, they have to be high competent with skillful quality, spokesperson of the UEC Khin Maung Oo said.

“We (the commission) plan to set the academic criteria regarding with the candidates to a certain extent as we looked over and reviewed the previous parliament terms, and discussed with the political parties. Criteria will be let known after approve,” Khin Maung Oo said.

There will be no restriction on belongings and possessions or economic status of the candidates, he added.

Age qualifications of the candidates of Pyithu Hluttaw and State/Region Hluttaws are 25 years old minimum while Amyotha Hluttaw candidates have to be 30 years old.

Those whose parents of both or one of the parents were not the citizens when the candidate was born shall not be allowed to run in the election as a candidate since they do not meet with the candidate qualifications.
