ASEAN should avoid one-sided assessment on Myanmar issue: Foreign Ministry

Myanmar condemned the ASEAN’s usage of “lack of progress’ on the implementation of the five-point consensus in the joint statement of the 55th ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in its statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday saying ‘it neglects Myanmar’s efforts on its implementation.’

The ASEAN should respect Myanmar’s efforts to manage its internal affairs as per the 2008 Constitution, the statement expresses.

The country’s anarchic instability and turmoil are made by all sides, not only the authorities. The country is facing murder, bombing, shootings, and terror plots daily that are committed by the terrorists taking advantage of the revolution.

Therefore, the ministry says in the statement, “ASEAN should avoid any one-sided assessment on the implementation of the five-point consensus. Progress of implementation of ASEAN five-point consensus should be assessed in objective and fair manner based on the factual updates and situations on the ground.”

The MOFA also denounced, in its statement, the external’s usage of ‘political activists’ with regard to the execution of four recently, saying that the Myanmar government provided timely information on the terrorist activities and the loss of innocent lives and damages caused by those activities to the external community.

“The Ministry strongly objects and rejects on the Joint Statement issued by the AICHR representatives of Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore and some ASEAN member states’ expression of their concerns on the execution of four criminals as they are incorrectly referred them as “political activists”, the statement expresses.

However, the ASEAN envoy to Myanmar Prak Sokhonn warns on further executions as it would force the regional grouping to reconsider how it engages with fellow member Myanmar, the international news reported.

Regarding with Myanmar issue, China’s State Councilor Wang Yi said ‘ASEAN-led approach is needed to resolve Myanmar issue’ during the meeting with Thai’s high-rank leaders on the sidelines of AESAN-plus foreign ministers’ meeting.

Wang said China believes that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations should adhere to the ASEAN-way and promote the soft-landing of the Myanmar situation through dialogue and consultation, as well as on the basis of non-interference in the internal affairs, China Daily expressed.
