Court sentences Suu Kyi to addition six years on corruption

Former State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to six more years imprisonment by Naypyidaw prison special court yesterday (August 15) after finding her guilty in four corruption cases including misuse of Daw Khin Kyi Foundation’s land and building under Anti-Corruption Law Section 55.
State Administration Council proclaimed that the State has lost more than 5,200m Kyats for renting properties with buildings and land of more than 1 acre that is located on University Avenue Road in Yangon to Daw Khin Kyi Foundation since the former state counselor owned the land at a discounted rate when he was in the position of State Counselor.
The State also lost more than 19b Kyats in the case of Daw Khin Kyi Foundation’s La Yaung Taw Horticulture vocational project. When the former State Counselor applied for two plots of land at Naypyidaw City Development Committee, she used her political power and owned the land at a discounted rate.
More than 1b Kyats that was received as a public donation for Daw Khin Kyi Foundation was used to build a residential house for Suu Kyi, which was found to be committing corruption, the SAC claims.
Dr. Myo Aung, former mayor of Naypyidaw Council Area, and Min Thu, one of the members of Naypyidaw City Development Committee were also charged with land ownership issues at the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation’s La Yaung Taw Horticulture vocational project.
Aung San Suu Kyi, 77 years old, has already been sentenced to 11 years imprisonment in other cases and now was sentenced additional six years on four corruption charges. She is now detained in Naypyidaw Prison in a separate unit in well condition.
