Myanmar will proceed to place stateless Bengalis in its western parts only following terms involved in the agreements made between Myanmar and Bangladesh in 1992 and 2017, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing told during in-person talk with UN special envoy Ms. Noeleen Heyzer last Wednesday (August 17).

State Administration Council Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing officially met with Ms. Noeleen Heyzer on August 17 at the Presidential Office located in Naypyidaw.

Four points were agreed upon between the two countries regarding the Stateless Bengalis in 1992. In 2017, one point was added which says, the Army Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said, “those newly born need to have an affidavit from Courts.”

He continued, “While we have requested lists of refugees from the Bangladesh side, they failed to provide the verification forms agreed by both sides. Therefore we have difficulties in proceeding with verification.”

Those who want to return back to Myanmar need to prove that they were born in Myanmar or have resided in the country, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said.
