Ex-Yangon chief, ex-economic minister charged with long term imprisonment

Former chief minister of Yangon Region Hla Soe, former economic affairs minister Aung Than Oo and former secretary of Yangon region government Soe Soe Zaw were sentenced to long-term imprisonment by the court on December 8.
Although they were appointed by the State Administration Council (SAC), were detained under the charges of committing #corruption by relevant police departments on Jun 14.
The former chief minister Hla Soe was charged with 15 years imprisonment, the former minister of economy Aung Than Oo was 20 years and the regional directorate Soe Soe Zaw was six years by the Court.
When selling land plots from 2021 June 22 to 2022 January 21 under a meeting resolution by the Yangon Region land management committee, wherein, Hla Soe and Aung Than Oo carried out the processes without abiding by the President Office’s Directive No. 1/2017 and manipulated the land prices in selling lesser than the market prices set as per the Yangon Region’s Internal Revenue Department. The State lost a total of 38 billion Kyats for approximately 262 acres of land from Shwe Pyi Thar, Dagon Seikkan, North Dagon, South Dagon, Dala and Thingangyun townships, as the #Anti_Corruption_Commission investigated.
Secretary Soe Soe Zaw was a member of the Land Management Committee. He failed to report the officials’ manipulation of land prices in selling the lands; and conducted the land demarcation by directly connecting with the land purchasers. The secretary is convicted of guilty in involving in corruption which the State lost many budgets.
In addition, the former chief minister Hla Soe while he was taking a high-level position accepted 250 million Kyats from the former minister of economy Aung Than Oo, who also, accepted 500 million Kyats from a construction company owner, according to the investigation done by the anti-corruption committee.
The ex-economic affairs minister Aung Than Oo accepted over 950 million Kyats from eight persons who got permission to run on vacant and virgin lands, three persons who also got permission to purchase government’s lands, and one other under the title of Cooperate Social Responsibility.
