Sittwe-Kaladan International Port Opened

The Sittwe-Kaladan International Port that was constructed taking assistance from the Indian Government was opened on May 9, according to State Administration Council.

Union Minister for Transport and Communications Admiral Tin Aung San and India Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Mr. ShriSarbananda Sonowal attended the opening ceremony of the Sittwe-Kaladan International Port.

As per information, the port is part of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project which is connecting the eastern Indian seaport of Kolkata with Sittwe seaport in Rakhine State, Myanmar by sea.

The port will provide advantages and benefits for Rakhine State and Chin State, Admiral Tin Aung San remarks.

Thanks to the project, goods and commodities will be able to smoothly flow by means of maritime route, river route and land or motorways. This smooth flow of goods can promote the bilateral trade between India and Myanmar and it can create positive effects on regional and local trades and production, he said.

It is expected that the port can promote better commodity flow between Rakhine State and Chin State and therefore, the socioeconomic life of the local people will be improved. In addition, trade can be enhanced directly with not only India but also other neighbouring countries via the Sittwe-Kaladan International Port, Admiral Tin Aung San remarks.
