Myanmar and India have signed five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) under the Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) initiative, focusing on enhancing public infrastructure in key sectors. These MoUs were exchanged during a ceremony in Naypyidaw, witnessed by Myanmar’s Union Minister of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations, Dr. Kan Zaw, and Indian Ambassador Abhay Thakur.
The QIPs aim to benefit communities across various regions and states in Myanmar. The projects will target areas such as information technology, e-governance, e-learning, law enforcement, and rural infrastructure. India has committed up to US$ 500,000 for the 2024-25 financial year to support these initiatives.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Abhay Thakur highlighted India’s longstanding development cooperation with Myanmar, emphasizing the importance of the partnership in making the assistance program more impactful. He noted that these new projects align with India's commitment to assisting Myanmar in its development efforts. The MoUs were signed during the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme, held at the Myanmar International Convention Centre II.
In addition to the new agreements, Ambassador Thakur mentioned India’s broader contributions to Myanmar, including the recent delivery of 53 tons of relief material following Typhoon Yagi. Indian associations in Myanmar also made generous donations to aid relief efforts for the victims of the disaster. He further acknowledged Myanmar’s participation in the three Voice of Global South Summits, hosted by India, which strengthened ties between developing countries.
India's ongoing development assistance to Myanmar includes major connectivity projects such as the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway. These initiatives, along with various community-focused programs, underscore the deepening partnership between the two neighboring countries across sectors like infrastructure, agriculture, and IT. –
