U Ye Min Aung, President of the Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF), has announced that processes are underway to register Myanmar’s Pawsan rice as a Geographical Indication (GI) Product.
At a meeting held on 27 November at the MRF Conference Hall, located within the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI), President U Ye Min Aung delivered his address.
The MRF is exclusively exporting rice varieties that are not usually sold for domestic consumption. The federation has set a target of exporting nearly 2 million tons in the current fiscal year.
The MRF intends to elevate Myanmar’s Pawsan rice to the status of a branded product for export to foreign markets. Furthermore, efforts are underway to secure GI Product registration for this rice variety of Pawsan.
“Pawsan rice, renowned for its delicious taste, should be introduced to the global market. Just as Pakistan has successfully marketed its Basmati rice, grown in India, Pakistan, and Nepal, and Thailand has established a global brand for its Jasmine rice, Myanmar’s Pawsan rice, particularly Shwebo Pawsan, which has already received GI status, should be promoted as a premium brand. To achieve this, it must be processed to ensure high quality, cleanliness, and purity,” said President U Ye Min Aung.
Data released by the MRF indicates that over 400,000 tons of rice and broken rice were exported in October of the current fiscal year, surpassing the monthly export volume recorded in the preceding seven months.
