The State recovered nearly USD 4 million and 30 billion kyats as the national treasury from the court prosecutions of corruption cases, according to Anti-Corruption Commission.

The Anti-Corruption Commission is also investigating and underway for taking action against cases of abuse of authorities, including bribery and corruption, which have caused financial and property losses to the state and harm to public interests.

The Anti-Corruption Commission of Myanmar was established in 2014 and since then, the commission has received 37,613 complaints, according to the commission.

According to the investigations, there were 348 corruption perpetrators, and they were prosecuted under the Anti-Corruption Law, while 3,008 civil servants were also prosecuted under the Civil Service Law respectively.

In addition, the commission disclosed that a total of 17.33 billion kyats and over USD four million were recovered as the national treasury from the prosecutions of corruption cases.

“If there is corruption involving, say, one billion kyats, it should be focused on that one billion kyat to recover national finance. Assets inherited from ancestors or family-owned properties cannot be seized. Decisions must be based solely on the amount involved in the corruption. That’s how I see it. Ultimately, it’s better to be free of corruption. Only when everyone is corruption-free will the economy improve. It will benefit the country as well as the people,” said U Yan Naing Win, Vice-Chairman of the Federal Democratic Party, in an analysis shared with NP News.

The commission also stated that corruption in Myanmar occurs in various sectors and is increasingly being reported in political spheres.

It was reported that in the decade since the Anti-Corruption Commission was established, a total of 348 individuals were prosecuted under the Anti-Corruption Law.

These individuals included 67 political officeholders, 23 high-ranking officials, 101 high-rank civil servants, 86 civil servants, 18 public servants, and 53 other individuals.

The State Administration Council’s Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has previously stated that the state has lost more than USD 13 million and 361 billion kyats due to corruptions committed by former state leaders including former President U Win Myint, former State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, and former ministers.
