Former spokesperson Zaw Htay passed away this morning

49-year-old former spokesperson of the President’s Office under the government ruled by the National League for Democracy, Zaw Htay, expired from heart failure this morning (May 23) at his home in Naypyidaw.

“He died from heart failure at his home where he has been living after he refused to continue serving the government duties after the recent political crisis. He has suffered from cardiac disease. Now he died from myocardial infarction,” one of his friends told the NP News.

He retired from the military in 2007 and served as the director of the President’s Office under U Thein Sein's administration. Then, he became the director-general of the State Counselor’s Office and the spokesperson of the President’s Office during the NLD administration. Most press conferences convened in the NLD administration were led by Zaw Htay.

He wrote many articles with the pen name of ‘Hmue Zaw’ on his social media page and in magazines.

In addition, he published ‘Renaissance Myanmar Magazine’ aiming to have the president, ministers, parliamentary speakers, Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services, and the Generals read it.

His friend remarks that he has a strong desire for the country’s development and reforms.

He graduated from the 37th Intake of the Defense Services Academy.
