In engaging with other countries, priority will be given to those that can provide practical benefits to the social interests of the people, said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, spokesperson for the State Administration Council (SAC).
Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun made the above remarks in response to media inquiries about the trip upon returning to Naypyidaw Military Airport on June 29 after attending the 4th Eurasian Economic Forum (EEF 2025) held in Minsk, Belarus.
“Myanmar pursues an independent, active, and non-aligned foreign policy. In international relations, we treat all countries as friends and remain faithful to them. However, in engaging with other countries, we must prioritize those that can bring greater benefits to our nation and provide practical advantages for the social interests of our people. I believe that during this visit, we have gained valuable opportunities to support the development of the Myanmar people and improve the socio-economic conditions of the country,” said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun.
The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) was established in 2015 with two objectives: to promote economic cooperation among member states and friendly countries as well as to raise living standards, said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun.
He also noted that Myanmar has been strengthening its engagement with the EAEU since 2022, culminating in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in 2023. This cooperation continued into 2024, with subsequent meetings taking place in both Naypyidaw and Russia.
The EAEU's founding treaty includes the principle of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each country, and the second principle is to respect the national interests of each country, which are necessary for every country, said SAC spokesperson.
“Today, around the world, whether in economic, political, or other important matters, some actors are shaping events as they wish, while others are obstructing progress. By cooperating with the EAEU, we will gain the strength that comes from collaboration,” said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun.
