Recent events show that even in the Wa self-administered region, strict regulations for the rule of law have been implemented.
According to a report from the Wa Youth Voice Network, it has been revealed that the UWSA (United Wa State Army) has sentenced to death the person who killed a child during a heist in Hopan, Wa region. On August 3, a heist occurred in a store in Hopan, resulting in the death of an eight-year-old child.
It has been reported that in Hopan, a town controlled by the UWSA, a judicial ceremony was held on October 30, during which the perpetrator of the murder was sentenced to death. Additionally, six individuals involved in sexual assault crimes were each sentenced to life imprisonment and 15 years in prison. This event was presented to the local residents in a cultural setting.
After the UWSA took control, the death sentence in Hopan is the first of its kind. According to a spokesperson from the Wa group, the imposition of the death penalty has been a longstanding policy of the group. They emphasized the importance of educating the public to prevent such incidents from occurring again. While the death penalty was carried out in front of the public, decisions regarding its implementation will not be made publicly; the judicial department will determine where such sentences will be carried out.
In addition, on October 25, authorities from the Wa region announced that strict action would be taken against price gouging in areas controlled by the UWSA, including the Panlon, and Namti in northern Shan State.
The UWSA's statement also mentioned that they will monitor the sale of food and goods. Any goods that are hoarded without being sold or sold at inflated prices will be classified as illegal activities, and those responsible will face severe penalties.
They stated that these measures aim to ensure the availability of essential goods for the local population, reduce restrictions, and stabilize prices in the region.
Following the restrictions imposed on the importation of goods from China into the Wa region, prices in the local market have risen. It is in this context that the UWSA has issued the current statement.
These events indicate that there is strict enforcement of the rule of law within the Wa region
