According to Indian media outlets, Mizoram Police have apprehended five individuals, including a leader of the Chin National Front (CNF), an insurgent group, near the India-Bangladesh border in the Mamit district of western Mizoram.
It is reported that at least five suspected members, including a leader CNF, were arrested on Wednesday (January 15) for illegally transporting weapons from across the border to Bangladesh through northeastern India.
The weapons were intended for trade between the CNF and the United People's Democratic Front, a militant group operating in Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts.
During the operation, authorities seized 6 AK-47 rifles, 10,050 rounds of AK ammunition, and 13 magazines.
Reports indicate that the arrest of the CNF leader represents a major achievement in counter-insurgency operations in Mizoram. A case has been registered at the West Phaileng Police Station in Mamit district, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities are also working to dismantle the arms smuggling network.
Mizoram is one of the northeastern states that shares borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh. Due to ongoing conflicts involving ethnocentric groups fighting the Myanmar government, over 40,000 refugees have sought shelter in Mizoram. The local population on both sides of the border shares ethnicties.
