According to information from the Ministry of Commerce, cement has been allowed to be imported from the Kawthoung border trade post to meet domestic cement demand.
As the current season has arrived, construction works are underway at a rapid pace across the country.
Therefore, it is reported that cement imports have been allowed to meet the domestic demand, which is essential for the construction industry, and to supplement domestic cement production.
According to information from the ministry, cement imports are allowed from the Kawthoung Border Trade Posts and by sea starting from the last week of January.
In the first six months of 2024, the highest price of a bag of cement in the country was only about 15,000 kyats, but over the next 6 months, in January 2025, it rose to more than double - 30,000 kyats.
According to the construction industry, the annual cement demand in Myanmar is over 10 million tons, while domestic production is under 8 million tons, therefore the daily cement demand is over 500,000 bags.
