Thailand, China to jointly crack down on Myawaddy call center gangs

The Bangkok Post reported on January 27 that a Thailand police lieutenant general and a Chinese assistant minister of public security met to discuss measures to crack down on the call-scam gangs operating in the Myawaddy area near the Thailand-Myanmar border.
A Chinese assistant minister of public security, seeking help to curb their activities, reported that there are 36 major Chinese call-scam gangs employing over 100,000 callers to deceive victims and defraud their money.
Reports indicate that Liu Zhongyi leads the Chinese delegation, that arrived to seek cooperation from Thai police, commissioner of the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) in addressing the issue of Chinese scam gangs operating from Myanmar's Myawaddy area, located near Thailand's Tak province.
The Chinese assistant minister stated that many Chinese individuals were lured into working for the gangs, with many suffering assaults and some even losing their lives.
It is reported that the Chinese assistant minister asked the CCIB to help identify Chinese victims still detained in Myanmar and to exert pressure for their prompt release.
The Chinese assistant minister also requested that Thai authorities block the channels used by scam gangs to operate and gather resources. Furthermore, his delegation proposed the creation of a coordination center between Thai and Chinese authorities to work together on combating call scams.
In response, the CCIB recommended that both sides share information on the scam gangs and their human trafficking activities, according to reports. They also suggested that Chinese authorities support their Thai counterparts in locating and capturing the gang leaders, as well as blocking the flow of funds from victims to the scammers' accounts. –
