Over 560 rape cases, including child rape, reported nationwide in 365 days

From January to December of the year 2024, over 560 rape cases, including child rape cases, were reported across the country according to data from the Union Supreme Court.
During the year 2024, there were a total of 562 rape cases filed in regions and states nationwide, with 333 involving children victims and 229 involving adults, as stated in official releases.
Among the child rape cases, the Ayeyarwady Region recorded the highest number, with 114 cases.
Additionally, Yangon Region reported 12 cases of child rape, and (82) cases of adult rape, the highest among all regions and states.
During the year 2023, there were 705 rape cases nationwide, with 445 child rape cases. This shows that child rape cases decreased by 143 in 2024 compared to 2023.
Furthermore, in 2022, there were a total of 860 rape cases across the country, with 627 child rape cases. Similarly, in 2021, there were 969 rape cases nationwide, including 672 child rape cases, according to Union Supreme Court reports.
Under Section (376), sub-section (3) of the Penal Code, whoever commits rape against a woman under twelve years of age shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of twenty years or with imprisonment for life as the maximum penalty. –
