Amid growing international concern, recent reports about the health of Myanmar’s detained former leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, have stirred widespread speculation. However, investigations reveal that claims regarding a deteriorating heart condition are not supported by verifiable medical evidence.
According to The Independent, Suu Kyi’s youngest son, Kim Aris, has urged the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) to grant her immediate access to medical treatment, asserting that her heart condition has worsened as a result of her continued detention since February 2021. Aris told the publication that there is no doubt her health has declined under current conditions and insisted that she requires urgent treatment outside of prison.
However, in an effort to confirm the accuracy of these claims, the Statesman Journal made inquiries into Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s present health status. A medical professional, who has been monitoring her condition on a daily basis and requested anonymity, dismissed reports of serious health issues.
“We have to check her health every day and report everything. As of now, her health is normal. It’s not in a serious condition as the rumors suggest. There’s no deterioration like what’s being reported in the news,” the doctor stated.
Further supporting this, a report published by The Guardian in late July cited a Myanmar prison source unaffiliated with the authorities, who confirmed that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi appeared to be in stable condition when last seen in early 2024. The source noted that her voice and way of walking remained unchanged. While she no longer wears flowers in her hair, the source clarified that this is a personal choice rather than a sign of declining health.
In addition, prison records obtained by The Guardian detail a structured and consistent daily routine that includes early rising, meditation, light exercise, and a modest diet. These details do not point to any urgent medical crisis or specific signs of a worsening heart condition.
Taken together, the statements from her attending medical staff, eyewitness accounts, and routine documentation strongly suggest that claims of a deteriorating heart condition are not supported by current evidence. Therefore, there is no independent confirmation that her health is in serious decline at this time. –
