Four #Kayin armed groups including Karen National Union, KNU/ KNLA-PC, Democratic Karen Buddhist Association and Border Guard Force are reportedly discussing systematic reformation or restructuring of the Karen Forces Unity Committee.

The Committee was established in 2013.

“Aiming to establish a closer collaboration in the formulation of #peace, stability and development within the region, the Committee regularly holds meetings and discussions. The committee served as the platform to execute shared interests of Kayin State although armed forces in Kayin State bare different characteristics and features.” said the spokesperson of KNU/KNLA – PC, Colonel Saw Kyaw Nyunt.

Among the Karen Forces Unity Committee, the KNU, the DKBA, and the KNU/KNLA-PC are the NCA signatories. The committee is holding a meeting at regular intervals to serve to restore peace and stability in this current crisis period, Colonel Saw Kyaw Nyunt said.
As the committee was developed in 2013, there are now some vacant positions in the committee as some representatives just dropped out due to the current conditions while some are getting old age.

Colonel Saw Kyaw Nyunt added, “Some leaders are getting old. So they can’t serve their duties and some of them passed away during these 9 years. Therefore, committee reformation is urgently needed to be able to establish regional peace. Discussions are ongoing to assign in these vacant positions with new representatives so that it can run with full functions.”
