As per the announcement made by the Union Election Commission (UEC), there are altogether 63 political parties across the country that have applied for registration at the UEC under the Political Parties Registration Law after sixty days period for the political parties to registration.

Amongst, 13 parties applied for the establishment and registration of the political parties under Section 3 of the law while the rest 50 applied for the right to continue to exist as political parties and registration under Section 25 of the law. The Political Parties Registration Law was enacted by the State Administration Council as per the Law No 15/2023 on January 26, 2023.

Twelve of them are expecting to run for the election campaigns at the nationwide scale whereas 51 remaining are projecting to run at the regional scale (state/region).

Meanwhile, the Union Election Commission is conducting the verification processes upon the applications for party establishment and registration.

Those political parties that existed under old Political Parties Registration Law enacted by the State Peace and Development Council by Law No 2/2010 were allowed to renew their registrations in accordance with recently enacted Political Parties Registration Law by the State Administration Council under Section 25.

It has been expired on 28 March 2023 for those aforesaid political parties to renew the registrations.

Those political parties that failed to renew the registration under Section 25 are said to be dissolved automatically by the law.

Section 25 of the Political Parties Registration Law prescribes: “The political parties that exist as the political parties as per the Political Parties Registration Law (enacted by the State Peace and Development Council by Law No. 2/2010) shall re-apply for the party registration to the Union Election Commission, in accord with the provisions stated by this law, within sixty days effective from the date ratified this law. If it fails to re-apply for the registration, such political party thereafter is said to be dissolved automatically by the law.”

Therefore, a total of 40 political parties that have failed to submit party registration have been dissolved and their right to exist as a political party is automatically nullified.

The Union Election Commission is currently investigating the background information including financial and criminal clearance of the political parties that have submitted for newly establishment under Section 3 of the law, and other related inspections with assistance of Bureau of Special Investigation, Immigration Department and relevant departments so as to pass the applications.
